After Ivan: A tale Of Two Islands

The failure of the Grenada government to hold regular sittings of parliament after the passage of hurricane Ivan does not augur well for democracy.

World Bank Preliminary Damage Assessment
On 7 September 2004, Hurricane Ivan, one of the most powerful hurricanes to hit the Caribbean region in the last 10 years, ravaged Grenada with rain and winds of 220 kilometres per hour. 'Ivan,' a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, left behind an unimaginable scene of destruction and despair on this tri-island nation of 102,000 inhabitants.

Some 37 people died and most of the population of Grenada was affected to a greater or lesser extent. Of the six parishes, St. Andrew, St. David, St. Georges and St. John were completely devastated, and the destruction is very striking in all remaining parishes as well. Approximately 90% of the houses were damaged or destroyed; according to government estimates, some 50% of the population is now homeless.

COMMENTARY - Law and Politics: A lot of talking - but no action resulting
The journey facing us in these (once-upon-a time) Spice Isles, cannot be over-exaggerated - in terms of coming human hardships of all varieties, of making sacrifices and being very humble, and above all else of exercising patience and deep tolerance.

Obviously and quite naturally, different personalities will be affected very differently. In addition thereto, some of us are better equipped to face the hardships and whatever else maybe coming, for a variety of reasons.

The Way Forward – Paved With What?
It is a well known truism that many a success story stems from initial disaster, disappointments, and very oppressive conditions of one form or another.
In other words, human beings generally – when faced with real, life threatening dangers, or situations that are geared towards disrupting their freedoms and lifestyles and living standards – they are far more inclined to react, respond, or retaliate to preserve their status; and in so doing, often times achieve much more than they had before, or ever thought about initially.

Law and Politics: Ivan changed many things - not everything
by Lloyd L. Noel
Tuesday, October 12, 2004

I wish I could have said, in all sincerity, after one month since “Ivan the Terrible,” that things are progressing smoothly, towards the massive recovery and reconstruction process that is the bedrock of our survival.

In times of such extensive devastation, as our tiny Tri-Island State suffered on September seventh, it must be understood and fully appreciated that things are not the same as before, cannot return to being the same overnight, and in fact may never return to what they were before.

Grand Anse Beach A Disgrace
Grenada's Grand Anse Beach is a disgrace. After 5 weeks nothing has been done to clean up the beach for much needed tourists. Two major hotels on the beach are closed for rebuilding, but have they and all the hotels forgotten that their portion of the beach, at least from the high water line is their responsibility to keep clean?

On the other hand, what is the government of Grenada doing about cleaning up Grand Anse Beach from the shore to the high water line? Grand Anse Beach is known as the premier beach and attracts many visitors to Grenada. So far, the government departments have done absolutely nothing about this unacceptable condition!

Ivan: Grand Cayman and Grenada
GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands: The scars left by Hurricane Ivan in two Caribbean islands, followed by the recuperation process, have left praises for some and more questions than answers for others.

Though hurricane ‘Ivan’ has dealt a devastating blow to the beautiful island of grenada, the reconstruction process is already well underway.

It will be extensive and expensive. Communication remains difficult for many and impossible for others, but it is improving. Island transportation is resuming and aid is arriving daily. Airline flights are restricted and confirmation of flights is advised. Power is being restored slowly with the help of technicians from neighbouring islands.

Law and Politics: We Are Sending the Wrong Signals
by Lloyd Noel
Tuesday, November 2, 2004

The way the politics in our devastated Tri-Island State is unfolding, or developing -- if that is the right term in the circumstances -- must be producing serious food for thought for our neighbours and aid donors worldwide, as well as our people here at home and abroad in the many metropolitan cities where thousands live and work.

Ivan Leaves An Indelible Impression On Ambassador Tincani
St George's, Sep 24, 2004 - I spent Monday in Grenada. I am not a humanitarian aid expert, so it is difficult for me to make comparisons. My eyes have not been hardened by repeated exposure to massive devastation and human squalor. What I sure could do was to imagine my home town and my family and friends under similar circumstances. The mere thought triggered tears that I could hardly contain; but contain them I had to, as I wanted to convey a message of solidarity and hope to Prime Minister Mitchell and the Grenadian people. I will never forget that day in Grenada.
